מכתב מאת שמואל בן חפני לקהילת קירואן, מתוארך לסביבות שנת 1008. במכתב מזכיר שמואל לבני הקהילה כי ישיבות סורא ופומבדיתא השלימו ביניהן עוד לפני פטירתו של רב שרירא גאון, וכי בנו של שרירא, האיי, הוא כעת חתנו של שמואל. הכותב מניח שהתרומות שנשלחו לישיבות בבל הגיעו בסופו של דבר לפומבדיתא. בעקבות פטירתו של יעקב בן נסים, בוחר הכותב את יוסף בן ברכיה להיות הממונה על שליחת הכספים, ומפרט את מעלותיו, את בקיאותו בתורה, ואת פירושיו לתורה, למשנה ולתלמוד. Princeton Geniza Project description: Letter from Shemuʾel b. Hofni to the community of Qayrawan. Dateing: ca. 1008 CE. In which Shemuʾel reminds the community that the yeshibvot of Sura and Pumbedita had made peace before the death of Sherira Gaon, and that Sherira’s son, Hayye, is now Shemuʾel's son-in-law. The writer assumes that the donations to the Babylonian yeshivot ended up at the Pumbedita. The writer chooses Yosef b. Berekhya to be in charge of sending the money, after the passing of Ya’akov b. Nissim. He details Yosef’s virtues and his knowledge of the Torah, and his commentaries to the Torah, Mishna, and Talmud. (Information from Gil, Kingdom, Vol. 2, #54) VMR
