מכתב מיוסף בן שמואל אלדאני בפלרמו אל אסמאעיל בן אברהם בדמסיס. החלק הראשון של המכתב עוסק באסון שאירע בים בדרך לסיציליה: ספינה טבעה בין סֻרְת (סירטה) להוארה שבלוב של ימינו. הוארה איננה לבדה, כפי שהציע גויטיין. במאה ה-13 היה נמל הוארה ידוע בשם קצר אחמד (אבן רֻשַׁיד אלסַבְּתי, רחלה, ו, 5), ובמאה ה-16 נודע בשם מצראתה. לאחר שהכותב הגיע לסיציליה, נודע לו שגורש מביתו. בחלק האחר של המכתב כותב יוסף על אשתו שעודנה במצרים. הוא כתב לה גט למקרה שלא יוכל לשוב. הוא מוכן למכור את אדמתו ולקחת את הסיכון לחזור למצרים, כדי לקחת אותה ואת בנם לפלרמו, אם תישבע שתלך עמו. Princeton Geniza Project description: Letter from Yosef b. Shemuel al-Dani in Palermo to Isma’il b. Avraham in Damsis. The first part of the letter deals with the tragedy that happened in the sea on the way to Sicily. A ship sank between Surt (Sirte) and Hawwāra in modern-day Libya. Hawwāra is not Lebda, as suggested by Goitein. In the 13th century, the port of Hawwāra was known as Qaṣr Aḥmad (Ibn Rushayd al-Sabtī, Riḥla, 6: 5), which became known as Misrata in the 16th century (AP). After the writer arrived in Sicily, he found out that he had been expelled from his house. In the other part, Yosef writes about his wife that is still in Egypt. He wrote her a divorce certificate in case he will not be able to come back. He is willing to sell his land and take the risk to come back to Egypt, to take her and their son to Palermo, if she swears she will go with him. (Information from Gil, Kingdom, Vol. 2, #173) VMR
