תיאור

חלקה התחתון של מכתב בערבית-יהודית. נכתב ביד מיומנת, עם כתיב מדובר או טעויות כתיב הנובעות מכתיבה מהירה. במכתב מוזכר אבו אלפרג' אבן אלרייס (=אליהו הדיין, ראשית המאה ה-13). הכותב מבקש מהנמען להשיג מכתב או מסמך מאישה אשר קרוב משפחתה (חתן או חם) הלך לצבא. הנמען מתבקש לכתוב בעניין זה במהירות ובדחיפות, אפילו אם יידרש לכתוב בלילה. (משמעות המילה "אלג'בר" כאן אינה ברורה, אך ייתכן שהיא מתייחסת באופן כלשהו להפצעת השחר.) מוזכר אבן נבהאן וכיצד אדם זה לקח ממנו את מחיר ה"חדידה" (סוג של צמיד). בסוף המכתב מופיעות דרישות שלום קצרות, ובקשה להיפגש עם אלמהד'ב ולמסור לו נזיפה מטעם השולח. בצד האחורי מופיעות שתי שורות בכתב ערבי, שייתכן שהן אותה שורה החוזרת על עצמה פעמיים, ככל הנראה שיר או אמרה סתומה, ובהן מילים כגון: تحمل اثارها ... ولو اعطيت ... سمسمة. ייתכן שמכתב זה קשור לאירוע בן התקופה של בנו של מנצור בן סאלם, אבו אלנג'ם, שברח לצבא, אך אין לכך הוכחה והפרטים אינם תואמים במלואם.

Princeton Geniza Project description: Bottom of a letter in Judaeo-Arabic. Written in a skilled hand and with either colloquial spellings or spelling errors due to writing quickly. Mentions Abū l-Faraj Ibn al-Rayyis (=Eliyyahu the Judge, early 13th century). Asks the addressee to obtain a letter/document from a woman whose in-law went off to the army. The addressee must write urgently in this matter, even if he has to write at night. (It's not clear what the word אלגבר means here, but it may refer somehow to the morning dawning.) Mentions Ibn Nabhān and how this person took the price of the ḥadīda (a kind of bracelet) from him. There are brief greetings at the end, and a request to meet with al-Muhadhdhab and pass on a rebuke from the sender. There are two lines of Arabic script on verso, which may be the same line repeated twice, likely poetry or a cryptic saying, some words: تحمل اثارها . . . ولو اعطيت . . . سمسمة. This letter could plausibly be related to the contemporary episode of Manṣūr b. Sālim's son Abū l-Najm running off to the army (see ENA NS I.2 (PGPID 11955) and the shelfmarks cited there), however there is no proof and the details do not quite match.
