ורסו: מכתב בכתב ערבי הממוען לנמען לא ידוע, מאת עלי אפנדי, מפקד חיל המצב של היניצ'רים בדמיאט. תאריך המכתב: ד'ו אלקעדה 1119 לה' (סוף ינואר – תחילת פברואר 1708 לסה"נ). הרקטו שימש מחדש לתפילת קבורה יהודית (תועד בנפרד). בפתח מהדורת המסמך מציינת ג'יין הת'אווי כי הוורסו הוא מכתב בערבית, משנת 1119 להג'רה, מאת מפקד חיל המצב המקומי של היניצ'רים (סרדאר), לנמען ששמו נחתך יחד עם החלק העליון של המסמך. מכתבו של עלי רומז לסכסוך בין אדם בשם מעלם מוסא — שהיה מן הסתם האמין היהודי הממונה על המכס בדמיאט מטעם בעל זיכיון חכירת המכס — לבין "הנוצרי" (אלנצראני), יחד עם "האנשים" (אלנאס), ככל הנראה שותפיו, שאף הם אולי נוצרים. הסכסוך נסוב סביב רשתות (בערבית: שבאביכ), כנראה רשתות דיג, שהנוצרי ובני בריתו חבים למעלם מוסא.

Princeton Geniza Project description: Verso: Letter in Arabic script to an unknown recipient from ʿAlī Efendi, the commander of Damietta's janissary garrison. Dated: Dhū l-Qaʿda 1119 1119 AH (1708 CE). The recto was reused for a Jewish burial prayer (see separate record: PGPID 41610). In the introduction to her edition, Jane Hathaway notes: "The verso is a letter, in Arabic, dated Dhū’l-Qaʿda 1119/late January–early February 1708, from the commander (serdār) of the local Janissary garrison to a recipient whose name has been cut off along with the top of the document.... ʿAlī’s letter alludes to a dispute between one Muʿallim Mūsā, certainly the Jewish amīn who supervised Damietta’s customs on behalf of the holder of the customs tax farm, and ‘the Christian’ (al-Naṣrānī), along with ‘the people’ (al-nās), presumably referring to his associates, who may well be fellow Christians.... This dispute concerns nets (Arabic, shabābik), no doubt fishing nets, that the Christian and his allies owe to Muʿallim Mūsā." (Hathaway, Ottoman-Era Documents from the Cairo Genizah, 99, 101-102)
