Princeton Geniza Project description: Recto: Legal document. In Hebrew. Location: Cairo. Dated: First decade of Kislev 5439 AM = November 1678 CE. It has to do with property and financial arrangements following the death of Levi Griyānī (גריאני) known as Ḥefeẓ. His orphans are David, Nissim, and Yiṣḥaq. Levi's widow Esther (also now deceased) used to reside in one of the properties, a shop in Sūq al-Kharuzātiyya of Cairo (spelled here as: סוק אלכ'ריזאתיין). This market near the center of early modern Cairo was a hub for goldsmith shops, in particular (Raymond, Artisans et Comerçants, 337). Another property from the deceased man's estate is on the street of the Maghrebi congregation (דרב ק"ק מערביים). Verso: Legal document. In Hebrew. Location: Cairo. The properties from "the other side" (מעבר הלז) of the document are referenced in connection with the Qamr and Simḥa's ketubbōt. For paleographical confirmation of Benyamīn Shaḥata's intricate signature, see BL OR 5561A.4–4a (PGPID 19226) where he refers to himself in the first person as scribe (ll. 6, 9). ASE/MCD.
