Princeton Geniza Project description: Letter from the Jerusalem gaʾon Shelomo b. Yehuda (r. 1025–51) to Efrayim b. Shemarya. Dating: end of 1025–26 (Gil). Written in a high register of Hebrew sajʿ (rhymed prose), as Shelomo b. Yehuda does when he's writing ex cathedra. Addresses accusations against Efrayim b. Shemarya by the Jews of Fustat, who threaten to denounce Shelomo b. Yehuda to the government for appointing an unworthy leader in Fustat (i.e., Efrayim) and claim that the gaʾon sends him letters (of appointment or support?) only because of the gifts and financial contributions Efrayim sends to Jerusalem. Refers to a government decree (nishtevan, using the biblical term from Ezra) "written to the communities to make peace," suggesting that the internal dissent had already led one faction to petition the caliph and receive a rescript in response. Some members of the Jewish community in Fustat want to remove Efrayim his position and replace him with Shemuʾel b. Avtalyon. Shelomo b. Yehuda tells Efrayim to restrain himself so as not to give his opponents reason to object to his actions. The margin ontains a Judaeo-Arabic postscript in a more pragmatic register asking Efrayim to reassure Ḥasan ibn al-Ṭayyib (Yefet ben Ṭov) that rumors of his dismissal are false, and that the gaʾon still holds him in esteem. In passing, the letter mentions that the Fatimid army is encamped against an enemy "from the east," presumably the Jarrāḥids. MR
