Princeton Geniza Project description: IB IV, 53b (*ח53). Letter from an unknown correspondent to Ḥalfon b. Netanel. Dating: ca. 1128 CE. In which the writer asks Ḥalfon to inform him whether or not he intends to travel that year, "for everyone who comes from there is unable to confirm the matter of your journey." The writer explains that he has dyed some textiles "and I ruined it all." Ḥalfon's letter arrived containing instructions to sell the merchandise, but the writer didn't dare, because he didn't know whether Ḥalfon had been informed of the price, and it wasn't clear whether he intended to travel. The fragmentary margins discuss a young man under Ḥalfon's protection who had been close to a royal personage, "may his glory be exalted" (yarum hodo)—perhaps his son. Friedman suggests that this blessing could be appropriate, for example, for someone from the family of Shemuʾel and Yehosef ha-Nagid. The writer asks about the protégé's studies and expresses the latter's gratitude for Ḥalfon: "[I do not] need to demonstrate to you the love for you and the devotion to you that are in the depths of his heart."
