T-S NS 83.12 + T-S NS J570

Princeton Geniza Project description: Two bifolios from a mercantile account ledger written in the same hand. These were written several years apart (T-S NS 83.12 dates to 1050–52 CE and T-S NS J570 dates to 1054–55 CE). The two fragments are not a direct join (T-S NS J570 is about an inch taller and wider) but are described as a join here due to the shared subject matter: each contains a day-by-day record of the flooding of the Nile. The date are given according to the Coptic calendar (including mention of עיד אלצליב, 'the Festival of the Holy Cross') and Hijrī calendar. The measurements used are iṣbaʿ (finger) and dhirāʿ (cubit). T-S NS 83.12 opens with a reference to the bestowal of a robe of honor (khilʿa) on Ibn Abī l-Raddād—apparently not an individual's name but the name for the official charged with reading the Nilometer (Cortese, "The Nile: Its Role in the Fortunes and Misfortunes of the Fatimid Dynasty," History Compass 13/1 (2015): 24). T-S NS J570 contains descriptions of the celebration of the opening of the canal (al-Khalīj) by the caliph Maʿadd Abū Tamīm al-Mustanṣir Billāh, the vizier al-Yāzūrī (called Sayyid al-Wuzarāʾ), and the latter's two sons Khaṭīr al-Mulk and Ṣafiyy al-Mulk. The dates are given mainly according to the Islamic and Coptic calendars, but Rosh Hashana and Sukkot (of the year 4815 AM) are also used as reference points. These documents are uncited in the literature. They were identified by Alan Elbaum and identified as a join by Marina Rustow. Pending publication by Elbaum and Rustow.
