Princeton Geniza Project description: Letter of appeal for assistance. In Judaeo-Arabic, with many phrases in Hebrew. Dated Nisan 5562 AM which is 1802 CE (= the 9th of the Omer = Matmonim 5562). Sent from Yiṣḥaq Ben-Naʿim, in Safed, to Nissim Molkho in Cairo. Yiṣḥaq explains the terrible conditions that have prevailed in Safed since the Jewish community was attacked on Shabbat ha-Gadol, the final Shabbat before Passover, during the French occupation of the city– "in the time of the Christians" (l. 15). When Ottoman forces sought to defeat the French in Safed, their forces "did not return to formations and colors" (l. 16) and sacked the city. Yiṣḥaq explains that Ottoman soldiers killed ten Jews during the siege and after the French left Safed, its residents have been "shirtless" (ll. 21-22). Yiṣḥaq is thus seeking aid from the letter recipient Nissim Molkho. A comparison of the calendrical occurrences of Shabbat ha-Gadol with events explained in French military correspondence leads to the conclusion that "this massacre of ten Jews took place in Safed on April 12-13, 1799 CE. During this timespan 1,200 Ottoman cavalry crossed the Jordan River, sacked the city, and surrounded the Safed Citadel. (Correspondance de Napoléon I, Tome V, 394-395). The contemporary chronicler and poet Niqūla al-Turk (1763-1828) offers further context for understanding how the massacre unfolded. He states that the cavalry in question were led by a certain Ibn ʿAqīl (ابن عقيل) from Damascus to Safed, where they 'pillaged the Jewish quarter' and cornered a French-allied defensive force in the Citadel. This latter detachment consisted of fifty soldiers under the command of a certain Muṣtafa Beshīr, who defended the Safed Citadel until French cavalry reinforcements arrived."
