מכתב מאת "אדון תרני האניות" (Master of the Shipmasts) אל אפרכוס נובי בעיר אִבְּרִים. המכתב מדווח על פעילותו של מֶרְכִּי, איש שהיה בשירותם של האפרכוס הנובי ושל אדון תרני האניות. לפי חאן, נראה כי מרכּי "פועל יחד עם הכותב המוסלמי של המכתב כדי לספק לאפרכוס ציוד צבאי, אך גם נטל על עצמו את האחריות לפעול כסוכן של השלטונות הנוביים בדיכוי מרידה". קריאות חלופיות: - במקום וانا בשורה 15 ייתכן לקרוא وانما ("רק"), כמו בשורה שלאחריה. - במקום انهيه בשורה 17 ייתכן לקרוא انهبه ("בוז אותו"), כמו בשורה 13. - במקום خيلك בשורה 19 ייתכן לקרוא ذلك ("זה"). - לגבי תרגום המילה ḥadīth בשורה 16, ניתן להבינה כמילה נרדפת ל-kalām (חזרה על הרעיון ש"דבריו אינם ישנים").

Princeton Geniza Project description: Letter from the Master of the Shipmasts to a Nubian eparch in Ibrīm. The letter reports on the activities of Merki, a man who was in the service of the Nubian eparch and the Master of the Shipmasts. Khan writes that Merki seems to be "working with the Muslim writer of the letter to supply the eparch with military equipment but he has also taken upon himself the responsibility of operating as an agent of the Nubian authorities in the suppression of a rebellion" (Khan, 255). Alternate readings (ASE): - For وانا in l. 15 it is possible to read وانما ("only"), as in the following line. - For انهيه in l. 17 it is possible to read انهبه ("plunder him"), as in l. 13. - For خيلك in l. 19 it is possible to read ذلك ("that"). - For the translation of ḥadīth in l. 16, this can be understood as a synonym for kalām (repeating the idea of "what he says is not old").
