מכתב עסקי מאת סוחר ספרדי צעיר הכותב מפאס לאביו יפת בן עולה הלוי באלמריה שבספרד. הכותב מגלה שהעדיף שלא להתארח בבית אביו בפאס אלא לשהות אצל ידידים, על מנת שיוכל להצהיר על סחורתו כמיועדת לסוחר מקומי. (המידע מבוסס על דברי גויטיין ועל תרגומו.) לאחר שנאלץ לשלם למושל (קאא'ד), למפקח המכס (מתוולי אלעשׁור) ולשורה של אחרים, הוא מתאר: "הייתי חולה שלושה ימים מרוב כעס וצער. אילו היה לי כאן אותו אומץ שיש לי בדרך כלל באלמריה, הייתי נחלץ בפחות מזה. אך ניחמתי את עצמי בנחמתו של מי שאין לו ברירה."
Princeton Geniza Project description: Business letter by a young Spanish merchant writing from Fez to his father Yefet b. ʿUlla ha-Levi in Almeria, Spain, revealing that he preferred not to use his father's house in Fez but to stay with friends instead in order to be able to declare his merchandise as destined for a local merchant. After he was forced to pay the governor (qā'id) and customs inspector (mutawalli al-ʿushūr) and sundry others, "I was sick for three days out of anger and sorrow. Had I possessed here the same courage as I usually have in Almeria, I would have escaped with less than this. But I consoled myself with the solace of one who has no choice."
