תיאור

מכתב מאליהו בן נסים, השוהה באלכסנדריה, אל שלה בן אסחאק בפוסטאט. כתוב בערבית-יהודית. תיארוך: ככל הנראה ראשית המאה ה-13. השולח, שהוא זר, שואל מדוע הוזנח ולא קיבל מענה. הוא מציין כי הוא נמצא באלכסנדריה ואינו יכול לבוא לקהיר ללא הזמנה. השולח מודאג משום שלא שמע מאיש זה ארבעה חודשים, וגם בשל מחלה שהתפשטה בפוסטאט. המכתב נפתח בציטוט מקראי (משלי יג, יב). השולח מוסר לנמען הוראות שונות, ובהן בקשה שישיב למכתבו ויעדכן אותו בחדשות, ובפרט אם אבו אלגַ'ית' הרוויח אם לאו; כמו כן הוא מבטיח לנמען פעמיים שהוא (ויש להניח שגם תכתובתו) לא נותקו ממנו. הכותב מציין כי הוא עודכן במצב כל מי שבבית הנמען (חאל כל מן), בבית [...] חננאל ובבית הראיס. נזכרים גם דודו של הכותב מנחם ובנו, וכן המדרש של ר' שמואל. צירוף הקטעים נעשה על ידי עודד צינגר.

Princeton Geniza Project description: Letter from Eliyahu b. Nissim, in Alexandria, to Shela b. Isḥāq, in Fustat. In Judaeo-Arabic. Dating: Probably early 13th century. The sender, a foreigner, asks why he has been neglected. He states that he is in Alexandria and cannot come to Cairo without an invitation. The sender is worried because he has not heard from anyone for four months and because a disease had spread in Fustat. The letter opens with a biblical quotation (Proverbs 13:12). The sender gives various instructions to the addressee, including that he reply to the letter and inform him of the news of whether or not Abū l-Ghayth made a profit; he also twice assures the addressee that he (and presumably his correspondence) have not been cut off. The writer states that he has been versed on the state of everything (hal kul min) in the addressee’s house, the house of […] Hananel, and the house of the raʾīs.
