מכתב מאת מצ'מון בן חסן בעדן אל אברהם אבן יג'ו במנגלור שבחוף מלבר בהודו. כתוב בערבית-יהודית. תיארוך: שנות ה-1130 לסה"נ. צירוף הקטעים: אלן אלבאום. קיים עותק נוסף של המכתב שנשתמר. במכתב מופיעה התייחסות למקום הנקרא אלדייב (al-Diyyab), שאליו מבקש מצ'מון שתישלח אונייה ממנגלור כדי לאסוף סיבי קוקוס (כויר), עץ אהל, מנגו (?) ואגוזי קוקוס. גויטיין ופרידמן מציעים לזהות מקום זה עם איי המלדיביים, אך לאמבורן טוענת שאיי לקדיב יהיו מסלול הגיוני יותר בדרך לעדן. המילה גזורה מהמילה dvīpa בסנסקריט או במלאיאלאם, שמשמעה "איים", ולכן ההתייחסות במכתב מעורפלת דייה כדי לתמוך בכמה פרשנויות אפשריות.

Join: Alan Elbaum. There is another copy of the letter preserved: PGPID 5438 (India Book II, 13 and II, 14). There is a reference in this letter to a place called אלדייב (al-Diyyab), for which Maḍmūn wants a ship to set out from Mangalore to pick up coir, aloeswood, mango (?), and coconuts. Goitein and Friedman suggest this is the Maldives, but Lambourn ("Twelfth-century Malabar through Geniza sources," in Sur les Chemins d'Onagre, 2018) says the Laccadives would be a more logical itinerary en route to Aden. The word derives from dvīpa in Sanskrit or Malayalam, meaning "islands," so the reference in the letter is vague enough to support multiple interpretations.
