תיאור

מכתב מבּוּ אלמחאסן, השוהה באלכסנדריה, אל אמו סת ע'זאל בת אבו עומר היושבת בפסטאט. השולח והנמענת זהים לאלה המופיעים במכתב נוסף מאותו צמד. ככל הנראה מדובר באותו מחאסן המוזכר בכמה מסמכים נוספים מתקופת פעילותו של הרמב"ם במצרים (1204-1168), וכן במסמך נוסף מהשנים 1203-1165 שנכתב בכתב ידו של שמואל בן סעדיה הלוי. גויטיין שיער, על סמך אחד המסמכים, כי האיש היה אולי יתום או שזהות אביו לא הייתה ידועה, מאחר שהוא מזוהה אך ורק על שם אמו; אולם ממכתב אחר עולה כי אביו המנוח היה אבו עלי. ייתכן גם שהוא הנמען של מכתב נוסף משנת 1181 לסה"נ. במכתב זה מספר בו אלמחאסן לאמו על הקשיים שנקרו בדרכו במהלך ההפלגה מקהיר לאלכסנדריה. הוא יצא מקהיר ביום שישי, אך לא הצליח לעלות על ספינת המפרש משום שפקידי המכס לא התירו לו זאת, ולבסוף שכר מעבורת שהעבירה אותו אל הספינה במקום שבו הפקידים לא יכלו לראותו. עם זאת, הוא נסע בנוחות בספינה הצפופה לאורך המסע, שארך כמעט שבוע, והגיע לאלכסנדריה ביום חמישי בערב.

Princeton Geniza Project description: Letter from Bū l-Maḥāsin, in Alexandria, to his mother Sitt Ghazāl bt. Abū ʿUmar, in Fustat. Same sender and same addressee as T-S AS 155.271 (PGPID 17921). Likely the same Maḥāsin as in T-S 10J12.16 (PGPID 2811), T-S 10J4.14 (PGPID 3017), ENA 1822a.8 (PGPID 6600) dating to the period of Maimonides in Egypt (1168–1204), and T-S K6.149 (PGPID 8486) also dating to the period 1165–1203 CE as it is in the handwriting of Shemuel b. Saʿadya ha-Levi. (Goitein suggested based on T-S K6.149 that this man may have been an orphan or his father unknown, since he is only identified by his mother's name; however in T-S AS 155.271 we learn that his deceased father was Abū ʿAlī.) He may also be the addressee of Moss. VII,159.2 + CUL Or.1080 J99 (PGPID 8883) dating to 1181 CE. In this letter, Bū l-Maḥāsin tells his mother about the trouble he encountered when sailing from Cairo to Alexandria. He left Cairo on Friday but could not board the sail-boat because the customs officials would not let him and finally got a ferry to take him over to the boat, where the officials could not see him. He did travel comfortably, however, on the crowded boat during the trip, which took almost a week, arriving in Alexandria on Thursday evening.
