Princeton Geniza Project description: IB II, 74. Letter from Yosef b. ʿIwāḍ to Ḥananel b. Shemuel. Alexandria, probably 1214-1215. Yosef's brother Futūḥ had died recently on a ship on the India route near Yemen. Yosef mentions that "Sheikh Maḍmūn" (i.e., Maḍmūn b. David) took the deceased man's possessions and sent them to Futūḥ's heirs in Alexandria. Yosef claims that Futūḥ did write a will that bequeathed a gift to him, but the will was not drawn up properly as they were "in a wine party" (ʿalā sharāb, l. 13). As a result, Yosef is now penniless. He reports already having written to the Nagīd of Egyptian Jewry (at the time, Avraham Maimonides), who wrote several unsuccessful letters on his behalf in an attempt to secure help from the local Jewish community. Now Yosef writes to Ḥananel b. Shemuel, whose father was acquainted with Yosef's deceased brother and their father, and asks him for a robe with which he can enter the synagogue. Yosef and Futūḥ's father was possibly Abu ʾl-Ḥasan ʿIwāḍ, an India trader known from one of Maimonides, Responsa, 1:99–102, no. 62. The basis for the identification is that the deceased Futūḥ may be identified with the deceased man Petaḥya mentioned in a quittance pertaining to his assets (PGPID 5480). That quittance mentions that Petaḥya's son is Abu ʾl-Ḥasan, possibly named after his grandfather. (PG) (Information from Goitein and Friedman, India Traders, 542–549).
