תיאור

מצד ראשון: מכתב מיהודה בן אהרן בן אלעמאני, שישב באלכסנדריה, אל אבו אלמג'ד מאיר בן יכין שבפוסטאט. כתוב בערבית-יהודית ומתוארך ל-23 בשבט 1208. יהודה העתיק עבור מאיר קינות ופיוטים. המכתב כולו עוסק בחילופי ידיעות ומידע מקצועי בין שני החזנים. בין השאר מסופר כי ר' עובדיה החזן מדמשק היה אמור למסור פיוטים מסוימים, אך עזב לפתע ללא הודעה מוקדמת, ועל כן יהודה שולח אותם במכתב הנוכחי (שורות 6–12 בצד הראשון). יהודה נוזף במאיר על כך ששלח לו בקשות מעורפלות מבלי לפרט את שורות הפתיחה של הפיוטים, דבר שמצנן את התלהבותו למלא את בקשותיו (שורות 12–17). כמו כן הוא מבקש ממאיר להחזיר אליו את הפתק בנוגע לנוסח הקריאה של דברים א, מד, אותו ראה יהודה בתאג' (כתר ארם צובא) (שורות 17–19). עוד הוא מעוניין לקבל ממאיר את הפתווא הקשורה לתביעה משפטית שמנהל יהודה נגד דיין אחד (שורות 20–22). הוא שואל האם עובדיה מתכנן לצאת שוב לדרך (שורות 23–24), ומסיים בדרישות שלום. לפי גויטיין, להסבר התאריך במכתב זה ובמכתב נוסף: יהודה כותב 168 ומשתמע 4800, כך שהשנה היא ד'תתקס"ח (4968). בצד השני טיוטה של שאלה משפטית בכתב יד אחר.

Princeton Geniza Project description: Recto: Letter from Yehuda b. Aharon b. al-ʿAmmānī, in Alexandria, to Abū l-Majd Meir b. Yakhin, in Fustat. In Judaeo-Arabic. Dated 23 Shevat, 1208 CE. Yehuda copied for Meir dirges (qinnot) and liturgical poetry (piyyutim). The whole letter deals with the exchange of professional news and information between the two cantors. In particular, R. ʿOvadya the cantor from Damascus was meant to deliver certain piyyutim, but he departed suddenly without warning, which is why Yehuda is sending them with the present letter (r6-12). Yehuda rebukes Meir for sending him vague requests without specifying the opening lines of the piyyutim, which cools Yehuda's ardor for fulfilling his requests (r12-17). He also asks Meir to send back the note about the reading of Deut. 1:44, which Yehuda had seen in the Tāj (the Aleppo Codex) (r17-19). He also wants Meir to send him the fatwa that relates to Yehuda's court case against a judge (r20-22). He asks if ʿOvadya is planning to travel again (r23-24) and concludes with greetings.
