טיוטה של מכתב מבית הדין הרבני בפוסטאט אל מצ'מון בן חסן בנוגע לעיזבונו של חלפון הלוי בן שמריה (אבן ג'מיהר), שספינתו טבעה בקרבת עדן. המכתב נכתב בפוסטאט בשנת 1146. בית הדין הרבני בפוסטאט מדווח כי שמע לראשונה על טביעת הספינה מפי עדים נוכרים, אך נמנע מלפעול עד שהידיעה אוששה על ידי מצ'מון עצמו, וזמן קצר לאחר מכן הגיעו גם שלושה עדים יהודים אמינים שדיווחו על האירוע. צוללנים הצליחו לחלץ חלק מן הסחורות מהאונייה הטבועה. חלק מהסחורות הללו נתפסו בידי השלטון (הסולטאן), אך חלק אחר הופקד אצל מצ'מון בן חסן. ככל הנראה היה ערכן של הסחורות גבוה מאוד. בית הדין בפוסטאט ביקש למצוא מי שישמש כסוכן (אפוטרופוס) על נכסיו של הנפטר. תפקידו של הסוכן היה להוביל את הסחורות ולקבלן לרשותו, וכן ליישב כל ערעור או תביעה מצד אנשים אחרים שעשויים היו לקיים עסקים עם הנפטר. הם מצאו מועמד מתאים באברהם בן יוסף (אבן בקאל), והציעו לו את הסכום הנכבד של שמונים דינר תמורת קבלת התפקיד. אולם אבן בקאל סירב, ומשא ומתן נוסף לא יכול היה להתקיים שכן הוא כבר היה בעיצומה של היציאה לדרך. ידוע לנו ממקור אחר שהוא הגיע לעדן בשנת 1146. בית הדין בפוסטאט מודיע למצ'מון שהוא מסכים לכך אם הצליח למצוא אדם אחר שישמש כנאמן, ואף מסמיך אותו להגיע להסדר עם אבן בקאל עצמו אם הלה יסכים לכך.

Princeton Geniza Project description: IB II, 70. Fustat, 1146. The draft of a letter from the rabbinical court of Fustat to Maḍmūn b. Ḥasan regarding the estate of Ḥalfon ha-Levi b. Shemaryā (Ibn Jumayhir), who was wrecked near Aden. The rabbinical court of Fustat reports hearing the news of the shipwreck first from gentile witnesses, but they waited to act until the news was confirmed by Maḍmūn himself, and shortly thereafter, three reliable Jewish witnesses also reported on the event. Divers salvaged some of the goods from the shipwreck. Some of these goods were seized by the sultan, but some of them were deposited with Maḍmūn b. Ḥasan. The goods were evidently of very high value. The court in Fustat wished to find someone to serve as an agent for the deceased man's goods. The agent's job would have been to transport and take possession of the goods, and settle any challenges or lawsuits with other people with whom the deceased man may have had dealings. They found a suitable candidate in Avraham b. Yosef (Ibn Baqqāl), and offered him the hefty sum of 80 dīnārs to take on the job. But Ibn Baqqāl refused, and further negotiations could not take place as he was already in the process of leaving. We know from PGPID 5534 that he arrived in Aden in 1146. The court in Fustat tells Maḍmūn that they accept if he has found anyone else to serve as trustee, and also empower him to make an arrangement with Ibn Baqqāl himself if the latter is amenable.
