תיאור

עצומה מאת נחושתן (קוֹפֶּרסְמית') מאלכסנדריה. תיארוך: ככל הנראה מן התקופה הפאטמית על פי המבנה והפלאוגרפיה, אך ייתכן גם שמקורה בתקופה האיובית. תאריו של הנמען תואמים לאלו של דיין איובי – אלשיח' עז אלדין בן עבד אלסלאם. לפי קריאתו של גויטיין, מגיש העצומה רכש סחורה כלשהי מן הדיואן, אך נאלץ להחזירה, וכעת הוא מבקש שיוחזרו לו אותם טובין ומבטיח לשלם תוספת של שלושה דינרים. לחלופין, ייתכן שהוא מתאר כיצד ביקש לנהוג במידת חסידות (תזכּא) למען הצבא (אלי אלעסכר), רכש פריטים מסוימים מן הדיואן, השקיע עמל בשיפוצם, ולאחר מכן השיב אותם – אך פוצה רק על שוויָם המקורי ולא קיבל עדיין כל פיצוי על עמלו (תכלף, תעב), ומכאן עצומתו. הצד הקדמי שימש שימוש משני לכתיבת פיוט עברי בכתב יד סופר ייחודי. ביד אחרת, מתחת, מצויה טיוטה של שיר תהילה (פאנֶגירִיקה) לרופא בשם אליעזר (המכונה "שר").

Princeton Geniza Project description: Petition from an Alexandrian coppersmith. Dating: Fatimid-era based on structure and paleography but could be Ayyubid. The titles of the addressee match that of an Ayyubid judge - al-Shaykh ʿIzz al-Dīn b. ʿAbd al-Salām. Goitein's reading is that the petitioner had bought some merchandise from the dīwān, but had to return it, and now asks to be given those goods back and promises to pay an additional three dīnārs. Alternatively, he may be describing how he wished to act piously (tazakkā) for the sake of the army (ilā al-ʿaskar) and bought some items from the dīwān, labored on restoring them, then returned them, but he was only recompensed their original value and has not yet received any recompense for his labor (takalluf, taʿab)—hence the petition.
